Tim Tebow, quarterback for the Denver Broncos in the National Football League, is being widely, and seemingly endlessly, promoted-as an icon not only in the realm of sports but much more broadly. I have followed sports, including football, for many decades now, and I cannot recall ever witnessing anything like this. In a highly orchestrated and concentrated campaign, Tebow is being held up as a "worker of miracles" on the football field but, more than that, as a "role model" and moral standard-bearer.

This hype around Tebow is completely and strikingly out of proportion to any demonstrated ability or actual accomplishments on Tebow's part, in terms of performance as a professional football quarterback. If you have been paying attention not only to the arena of sports but to things more broadly in this society and the world, you should be able to quickly guess why this is: Tim Tebow is a religious fanatic-of the Christian fundamentalist variety-who aggressively promotes his medieval views and values in a way that is obviously considered useful by significant sections of the powers-that-be in the U.S. read on...

BAsics Bus Tour Departing from LA on February 7th

This bus tour is part of the campaign to get BA's Vision and Works Everywhere. $7,000 has been raised nationally and it will make it possible for the tour to begin in a few short weeks. (Atlanta contributed $400 from our New Year fundraising party)

Picture this scene:

A bus rolls up to the entrance of a local college or into a high school parking lot. Or it pulls into the center of town and sets up big displays. Or maybe it appears at a club where the youth hang out or a neighborhood church where progressive people go. Or a homeless encampment of people driven into the hidden corners of society because they no longer have anywhere to live, or a place where farmworkers gather before heading out to another day of field work under the pounding hot California sun.

But this is no typical bus...

39 years after women won the right to abortion, this fundamental right is hanging by a thread.

Nearly 90% of U.S. counties have no abortion provider.
2011 saw the greatest number of restrictions passed at the state level - parental notification laws, mandatory waiting periods, gestational bans, etc. - restricting this access even further.
Doctors who provide abortions are hunted, terrorized and killed.
And the stigma and shame cast on women who get abortions is greater than ever.

Call to Action- End Pornography and Patriarchy: The Enslavement and Degradation of Women

We are told that "equality for women has been won" and that "there are no limits to what girls can achieve." BULLSHIT!

Every 15 seconds a woman is beaten. Every day three to four women are killed by their partners. One out of four female college students will be raped or sexually assaulted while in college.

In recent years, pornography has become increasingly violent, cruel, degrading towards women; women are referred to as "cumdumpsters" and "fuckbuckets"; the "money shot" (ejaculation in a woman's face) is standard; humiliating cruelty-like violent "ass-to-mouth" penetration-is normalized, and racist bigotry is sexualized. Meanwhile, the broader culture has been pornified: pole dancing is taught at gyms, "sexting" is a national phenomenon among teens, and the strip club is the accepted backdrop to male bonding. All this is tied in with, and reinforces,the trafficking of millions of women and girls as literal chattel in the international sex industry.

This is NOT society becoming more comfortable with sex. This is society becoming saturated with the sexualized degradation of women. If you can't imagine sex without porn, you're fucked.

At the same time, a Christian fundamentalist-driven assault is imperiling abortion, birth control, real sex education, and women's lives. Doctors are killed. Women who seek abortion (a safe, necessary, and perfectly moral medical procedure)-or even birth control-are stigmatized. 2011 saw the largest spate of legal restrictions on abortion since Roe v. Wade in 1973. Women who are not virgins or who do not choose to become mothers are shamed. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people who do not conform to traditional patriarchal gender and sexual norms are demonized and condemned.

The Occupy protests have raised the hopes of millions in this country and worldwide. Profound discontent with the inequality and injustice in this society has burst to the surface. The atmosphere and discourse in society is changing, and millions are thinking about and asking big questions about the ways things are-and whether and how a different future would be possible. Over the last few weeks, this movement has been repressed in what appear to be coordinated attacks to savagely evict encampment after encampment across the country. This movement stands at a crossroads-in the largest sense.

- Where to now?

- What is the essence of this crossroads and how are we to understand it?

- What direction should this movement take?

- And with what understanding and orientation?

- How will the injustice and inequality this movement is targeting actually be overcome?

- What kind of leadership is needed to bring that about?

In all we raised $270 and sold several copies of the book BAsics and Revolution paper, plus an additional $15 contribution at the bookstore. This film will tell the story of what those artists did and why they did it.

What brought together some of the top jazz musicians today, a cutting-edge "tropical punk" singer, a former member of the Black Panther Party, poets with their roots in the '60s and poets who shaped the more recent spoken-word movement? And how come it's always the women that have to get low? We already have a situation where the masses of women and the masses of people are pushed down and held down low enough already. It's time for us to get up and get on up.

Imagine if we had a society where there was culture--yes it was liveley and full of creativity and energy and yes rhythm and excitement, but at the same time, instead of degrading people, lifted us up. Imagine if it gave us a vision and a reality of what it means to make a whole different society and a whole different kind of world. Imagine if it laid out the problems for people in making this kind of world and challenged them to take up these problems. Imagine if art and culture too--movies, songs, television, everything--challenged people to think critically, to look at things differently, to see things in a different light, but all pointing toward how can we make a better world.

December 9 marks the 30th anniversary of the night Philadelphia police shot, beat, and arrested the revolutionary journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal. He has now been sitting in solitary confinement on death row for 29 years.

Shortly before dawn, on December 9, 1981, Mumia was driving a cab on a downtown Philadelphia street. He saw a cop viciously beating his brother, William Cook, with a metal flashlight. Mumia rushed to the scene. He was shot in the chest by the cop, and was found sitting on the sidewalk in a pool of his own blood. The cop lay on the street nearby, dying from bullet wounds. Arriving police attacked Mumia, who was well known to them as a revolutionary journalist and a former Black Panther, and arrested him for the murder of the cop.

From Up Against the Wall to Up in Their Faces . . . A Movement Has Begun to STOP "Stop and Frisk"

"...Black people in the U.S. have caught hell since the first African was dragged to these shores in slave chains. The forms of the oppression they were subjected to have changed, but the oppression has continued unchecked. Slavery was a key part of the economic foundation of the U.S., and it spawned laws, customs and ways of thinking that reflected and reinforced the domination of whites over Black people. And this has remained built into the very fabric of U.S. society, from slavery thru Jim Crow segregation and up to today's legalized discrimination, criminalization and mass incarceration. So we're challenging something that is very serious for the rulers of this country, and for us too.

"I mean, different people express it different ways. Cornel West said 'I want the young people to know that we're doing this because we love them.' That we don't view our youth as the problem. We don't see them as predators to be thrown in the prisons and caught up in the judicial system. And that's a very important sentiment to take. Myself, I come at this in terms of those youth need to step forward and join the emancipators of humanity and be the force that's gonna get rid of this imperialist system and the exploitation and oppression it brings down on humanity. And we can't have them trapped up in the criminal justice system and feeling like they can't act. We have to give them space to stand up, to raise their heads, to resist what's being done to them, but also to understand where it's coming from and join the fight to get rid of it. CARL DIX is a longtime revolutionary and a founding member of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA. In 1970 Carl was one of the Fort Lewis 6, six GIs who refused orders to go to Vietnam. He served 2 years in Leavenworth Military Penitentiary for his stand. In 1985 Carl initiated the Draw The Line statement, a powerful condemnation of the bombing of MOVE house in Philadelphia. In 1996, Carl was a founder of the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality. Carl coordinated the Katrina hearings of the 2006 Bush Crimes Commission. Currently, Carl has engaged in several dialogues with Cornel West called, "In the Age of Obama: Police Terror, Incarceration, No Jobs, Mis-education- What Future for Our Youth?" The next Dialogue is scheduled for December 2nd at UC Berkeley.

In the wee hours of the night on Tuesday into Wednesday, the mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed ordered the Atlanta police department, clothed with plastic handcuffs and goggles and backed up by riot squads, to clear Occupy Atlanta from Troy Davis Park (formerly Woodruff Park). They arrested 52 courageous people who refused to leave the park in an act of civil disobiedience. This outrageous move on the part of the city of Atlanta who so proudly touts its reputation as the city of the "Civil Rights Movement" now turns around and shuts down a righteous occupation.

But this is so not over! Occupy Atlanta has announced that they are regrouping and are planning to re-occupy in a new location. They will have nightly general assembly meetings in Centennial Park at 8:00 PM. This occupation needs to be supported and widened.

Come to the bookstore and together we will go to the new location of Occupy Atlanta and be a part of their general assembly Sunday evening at 8pm.

An extraordinary event has broken out in society. From the beginning with Occupy Wall Street in NYC and has spread to many, many other cities across the country and now internationally. Revolution Books Atlanta is encouraging everyone to support, visit, participate, and defend Occupy Atlanta in "Troy Davis Park" (formally known as Woodruff Park and renamed by Occupy Atlanta, downtown Atlanta, Auburn and Peachtree St.)

Monday, October 9, the police and city threatened to arrest and shut down the occupation. We called on many people along with others to go to the park, increase our numbers, stand with the occupation and make it more difficult for the city to shut it down, that evening we were successful! It is now reported in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution that Mayor Reed has set the deadline for Monday afternoon, October 17th, for Occupation Atlanta to end. It is urgent for all those who appreciate this movement and want to see it flourish to stand with the occupation to go to the park Monday to create the conditions where the Mayor, the police, and the city will have to once again back down.

Friday, October 7, marks the 10th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.
This is the longest war in U.S. history. The world's largest military destroying one
of the poorest countries.

In short, over the last 10 years: The U.S. has invaded and occupied Afghanistan and then Iraq; and in the name of a "War on Terror," (WOT), the U.S. has demanded a license to attack
anyone who opposes U.S. domination anywhere in the world. The U.S. ruling class has declared a doctrine of "preemptive war"-now being furthered by Obama-claiming the "right"
to threaten or launch wars of aggression based solely on so-called "intelligence estimates" of "potential threats" in the future; using covert operations, including assassinations, kidnappings, infiltrations, spying, and funding of networks of foreign agents.

This system executed Troy Davis—no they murdered him. They delayed his execution a few hours while the Supreme Court considered and rejected a last-minute appeal from Troy's lawyers. The court issued a one-sentence statement explaining why they refused again to reopen his case and look at the mounting evidence of his innocence. It might as well have said Black people have no rights we are bound to respect! The content of what the system has told us in this case, as they told us in the case of Shaka Sankofa eleven years ago, is that innocence is no bar to execution.

The powers that be say this country is the homeland of freedom. They tell the world that they are the greatest defenders of human rights. Then they turn around and railroad Troy Davis to jail on trumped up evidence, refuse to even consider the mounting evidence of his innocence and execute him on the basis of that railroad.

This was a legal lynching, plain and simple. It didn't matter to them that there was no physical evidence to tie Troy to the murder of the cop or that 7 of the 9 witnesses against Troy have come forward and said they lied, several of them claiming they were coerced to lie by cops who were dead set on frying some Black man, any Black man, for the killing of one of their own. No court has even bothered to reopen the case, listen to the witnesses recanting their statements against Troy and consider the police coercion that went into his conviction! What else can we take from that but that they are telling us—"We railroaded him, fair and square, and now we're going to strap him down and fry him."

The state of Georgia has scheduled the execution of Troy Davis for
Wednesday, Sept. 21.

In Atlanta, across the US, and around the world, there is going to be demonstrations and vigils and all efforts are being ramped up to stop the execution of an innocent man. (more info www.justicefortroy.orgÂ )

The Georgia Pardons and Parole Board will hold the last clemency hearing on Monday, Sept. 19. The board does have the power to grant Troy clemency, but this will not happen without an outpouring of resistance. This is an emergency, step up and step out!

From this week's Revolution newspaper

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people died when jets flew into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

The immensity and horror of the attacks shocked people. Never had such a thing happened on U.S. soil. Some reacted with rage, with blind patriotic fury. Mobs formed to call for revenge; people who "looked foreign" were not only spat upon and often beaten, but in some cases actually killed for the offense of "looking different." A network TV host deviated from the message and literally got told by the president's spokesman in a press conference to "watch what you say." He lost his show. Massive government roundups of over 1,000 immigrants occurred.

Other people-a minority, but not insignificant-were reminded of the scenes of horror on the nightly news that happen to "other people" who are "far away." They mourned the 9-11 victims... but began to ask questions. Why did this happen? They sought out others-friends, sometimes strangers-to talk, to make sense of it all.

But the very act of asking such "dangerous questions" quickly got ruled out of order by the Bush regime and through the mainstream media: We're not going to talk about that... don't think about any history before 9-11, don't consider the context for what happened... no, it's time to get with the program. "You're either with us or against us," Bush said and all of Congress rose to its feet to cheer.

No "weapons of mass destruction" were ever found in Iraq. An October 2004 CIA report concluded,

"Iraq unilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991" and found "no credible indications that Baghdad resumed production." An unnamed CIA official later said, "Bush didn't give a fuck about the intelligence. He had his mind made up [to go to war]."

Obama expanded U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan and increased the number of bombing raids into Pakistan. As of June 2011, 46,000 U.S. troops occupied Iraq. Under Obama the U.S. has staged bombing raids on six countries. The number of open military bases outside the U.S. has grown to over 1,000. When Obama took office in January 2009 there were 32,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. By December 2009-when this number had grown to 68,000-Obama announced an "Afghan surge" to add over 30,000 U.S. soldiers. Now Obama plans to withdraw the 33,000 "surge troops"-

10,000 by the end of 2011 and the rest by the summer of 2012. This means by the end of 2012, there will still be 68,000 troops in Afghanistan-more than twice as manyas the 32,000 when Obama took office.

While women in Afghanistan living under the Taliban were treated horribly, the U.S. military occupation has

in some ways worsened and created new conditions making women vulnerable to exploitation and degradation.

In terms of impoverishment, homelessness, and lack of medical care, the situation of Afghan women has

deteriorated under the U.S. occupation and the barbaric imposition of Islamic law on Afghan women remains

largely unchallenged. August 2009: U.S.-backed Afghan president Karzai signed a law which, among other

horrors, allows men to deny food and housing to their wives if the husbands' sexual demands are not met,

and prohibits a woman from leaving her home without her husband's permission.

The Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) reported in July 2011, "about 50 women die in childbirth each day in Afghanistan. One in three is physically or sexually abused and the average life expectancy of women is 44 ... more than 85 percent of Afghan women are illiterate, while 70 percent of school-age girls do not attend school for various reasons-conservative parents, lack of security, or fear for their lives."

Speaking about Afghanistan in March 2011, a top Obama official said, "Gender issues are going to have to take

a back seat to other priorities."

The book by Michelle Alexander, The New Jim Crow, Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, has shined a bright and much needed light on the reality of profound injustice at the very core of this country.
And this brings me back to a very basic point:
This system, in this country, in the whole history of its treatment of Black people, what has it been?
First, Slavery... Then, Jim Crow—segregation and Ku Klux Klan terror... And now, The New Jim Crow—police brutality and murder, wholesale criminalization and mass incarceration, and legalized discrimination yet again.
That's it for this system: Three strikes and you're out!

Revolution: We're speaking at a time when the uprising in Libya is being met with brutal force by the Muammar Qaddafi regime. In Egypt, Mubarak stepped down under pressure of the mass revolt and the obvious prod from the military. So one of the big questions on people's minds is what's similar and what's different as between Libya and Egypt.

Raymond Lotta: It's an important place to start the discussion. The uprising in Libya is an expression of profound discontent in Libyan society. Broad sections of Libyan society, taking inspiration from events in Tunisia and Egypt, have risen against an oppressive regime. And this uprising in Libya is part of the wave of rebellion sweeping through the imperialist-dominated Middle East.

But when you compare events in Libya with those of Egypt, there are two major differences.

First, in Libya, you have a situation where imperialist intrigue is commingling with genuine and just mass upheaval. This makes things highly complicated.

He has a deep love for the poor people and even as a Jesus loving free Black man, I love that brother. He bears witness, he's willing to pay a cost and, thank God, we've got his text now of writings that provide us an analysis of how we think about this mess in which we find ourselves... People are suffering, working people are being debased and it's time for us to straighten our backs up and brother Bob Avakian is one of the voices, one of the very important voices.

University student: I bought it expecting to disagree with a lot of it, but even the opening chapters have really been very lucid and provocative, with glaring parallels to the driving ideas behind veganism which I'm much more familiar with...You start reading it and it's like "the emperor has no clothes."

Prisoner: I believe that a book like BAsics is very important, because it provides people with a scientific understanding of the world in which we live in; as well as, with a vision of a different and better world. When I talk to people about BAsics I tell them to think about it in the following way. "Let's say you're sick and you want to get rid of the sickness, first, you have to know what the sickness is. In this way, you'll know what steps you have to take to get rid of the sickness. So, if you identify the sickness as a cough, then you know that you're going to need cough medicine to get rid of the cough. In this case, capitalism is the sickness and B.A. and his synthesis is the medication to the sickness." It's a crude analogy, but it helps in getting people to understand why a book like "BAsics" is so important.

In support and respect for the courageous prisoners at Pelican Bay State Prison and other prisons all around California, whose July 2011 hunger strike challenged the inhumane conditions of the Security Housing Units [the SHU] and inspired the support of people far and wide-we now call on people of conscience everywhere across the U.S. and beyond, to join in an International Day of Protest and Solidarity with the Prison Hunger Strikers on Monday, August 1, 2011.

The Hunger Strikers achieved real success: the conditions of systematic abuse and torture in the SHU-and widespread thru the prison system-were dragged into the light of day. Their original five core demands have now been acknowledged-although not yet met-by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), which promised to consider them. On Monday, August 1 many diverse people and organizations will publicly speak out and act in support of these demands. Prisoners at the Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay State Prison have been on a hunger strike since July 1-demanding an end to what amounts to torture and brutally inhumane conditions. The weekend of July 2-3, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that 6,600 prisoners, in 13 different prisons, refused food in solidarity with the strike. And there has been growing support on the outside from people who are demanding that the CDCR meet the prisoners' demands. read on...

At the July 14 emergency meeting at Revolution Books in New York City on the Pelican Bay hunger strike, participants discussed the need to heighten awareness and support for the hunger strike among people on the outside to a new level - as part of forcing prison officials to meet the prisoners' demands. One idea that came up was to contact prominent people, calling on them to write support statements and use their voice to spread the word. A letter was quickly written and sent out the next day. The following are initial statements written in response. Read, Support and Spread Revolution Newspaper

We have a strategy-and our newspaper is, as "The Revolution We Need... The Leadership We Have" statement says, "the foundation, guideline, and organizational scaffolding for [the] whole process" of carrying out that strategy.

This is the paper that cuts to the bone to tell you WHY things are happening... to show you HOW it doesn't have to be this way... and to give you the ways to ACT to change it.

It is a call to action and a means of struggle. It is, and has to be much more, the scaffolding on which this movement is built, where those who are getting into it and following it can wrangle in its pages and on its website with how we can better build this movement.

It is a guideline where today thousands, but soon tens of thousands and eventually millions, all over the place, stay connected and learn to act in a powerful and united way.

It is the foundation where those who read it learn about the larger goals of revolution and communism and come to see the ways in which the struggles of today are connected to those larger goals... where they come to grasp the scientific communist outlook through its application to all the many particular events and outrages and developments in society... and where they get organizationally linked up to this revolution.

The first hour we will talk about this small flotilla that is bravely attempting to defy the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza, the barriers it is facing, and the role the U.S. and Israel is playing in blocking its efforts.

The Freedom Flotilla II was made up of people from 22 countries aboard 10 ships. Its plan was to set sail from Greece in late May or early June to display international opposition to Israel's siege of Gaza. This was timed with the one-year anniversary of the first Freedom Flotilla, when, on May 27, 2010, Israeli commandos stormed the Turkish flotilla boat Mavi Marmara, shooting to death nine participants in the movement to bring aid to the people of Gaza. read on

"What is of note here and something that should concern all U.S. citizens, is the increasing use of behavioral control, i.e. Torture units and human experimental techniques against prisoners, not only in California but across the nation. Indefinite confinement, sensory deprivation, withholding food, constant illumination and use of unsubstantiated lies from informants are the psychological billy clubs being used in these torture units. The purpose of this 'treatment' is to stop prisoners from standing in opposition to inhumane prison conditions and prevent them from exercising their basic human rights."

For weeks the trial had been in the news. While the victim did not remember all the details, important facts were not in dispute. Some time after midnight on December 7, 2008, a cab driver called the New York City police to escort an intoxicated woman passenger from his cab to her apartment building. The woman was a 29-year-old fashion executive coming home from a celebration of her recent promotion.

Two NYPD officers, Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata, were recorded on a security video system taking the woman to her apartment. Over the course of the next four hours the two officers entered her apartment three more times, using her keys.

A LEGACY OF DEFIANCE

Imagine yourself taking a little trip back in time. Not too long ago-50 or 60 years. And not too far-imagine you're still in the U.S., in a southern state like Mississippi or Alabama or Georgia.

A lot of what you see is familiar; yet at the same time shockingly, grotesquely different. Public spaces, like restaurants, bus stations, parks, movie theaters, libraries-even water fountains and restrooms-are marked either "White Only" or "Colored Only." The spaces marked "White Only" are always cleaner, more up to date, more spacious. The "Colored Only" areas are back entrances, alleyways, rusted water fountains, maybe "rest rooms" pointing to a cow pasture.

It has been 100 years since the Civil War ended slavery in the United States. But the economic and social relations all around you bear the scars of the shameful history where Black people were owned by white people and produced much of the wealth for the foundation of U.S. capitalism. The end of slavery supposedly "freed" Black people. But instead, Black people continued to be subjugated as a people, in no less exploitative, oppressive forms. Under the sharecropping system, once again, they were chained to the land and worked like slaves, producing profits for the capitalists. And a whole range of laws and "traditions" codifying all this arose-and were violently enforced by the police and the KKK.
